Branislav Kropilak photography

Currently based in Barcelona, he graduated at the renowned Private Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia. Then, he successfully finished studies at the Institute of Digital Photography in Prague. His work was published in several books and magazines including TASCHEN and exhibited in galleries like the CEHP or the Moravian Gallery. Last year, he received a special prize from the jury of the Czech contemporary photography contest FRAME 005. And very recently, BMW germany invited him to make solo exhibitions in their unique galleries in Berlin and Munich. Besides all that, he worked nearly 8 years as both art director and photographer for top creative agencies such as BBDO, McCann-Erickson and Saatchi & Saatchi just to name a few.

Music From Mathematics. The film 7090

In 1962 a group of musicians, mathematicians and electrical engineers gathered at Bell Labs where they composed and recorded one of the first albums of computer generated music called Music From Mathematics. The film 7090 is a graphic response to this historic sound recording. You can find the moving image here.

Everything is determination

Yesterday I was looking for content on the web and experimenting a bit with the "tag" hype. I stumbled by hazard on the mediastorm site and stayed there for the rest of the evening. This site is a true statement against all the so called funny videos you find all over the place.




Here you find the direct link to a refugee odyssey I particularly appreciate. It must have been hell to capture this photo documentary.

Stardust

New York, 2005-2006

In my neighborhood, just behind the void of the World Trade Center, there is a multiplex theater where I go early in the morning. There, in the empty screening rooms, I photograph the little window that separates the projection cabin from the public space; or more precisely, I photograph the image that appears when the film passes through the window.

Around me, the loud darkness of the empty room. I like the idea of the show going on with nobody to watch it. There is a slight feeling of fear and excitement: it is forbidden to photograph in movie theaters.

The window is often dirty, dusty, with fingerprints on it. Or the flux of light is so strong that each grain of dust becomes iridescent. The image, partially stopped on its way towards the big screen, is completely fuzzy: a simple moving mass of colors and forms. Nothing is recognizable except maybe a blue sky or a silhouette. The traces on the glass become the only matter of the movie.

Maybe this is close to a newborn’s vision of his parents bending over the crib. This image is captured so close to its source that it exists as a quasi-image, something primordial, like a sonogram of the film; histories are dissolved, stars become shadows. Abstraction wins over Hollywood. All is to be imagined anew.
